Shelter Serra

The work of New York-based artist Shelter Serra explores the concepts of mass consumption and cultural identity by stripping recognizable objects and icons of their intended functionality and highlighting their underlying symbolism. Serra has collaborated with the Art Production Fund, Helmut Lang, Converse and Chanel. He presented solo exhibitions at BTW Gallery, Geneva, Switzerland; Anonymous Gallery, Mexico City, Mexico; and Beams Gallery in Tokyo, Japan, among others. His work has also been included in group exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore; Urbis, Manchester, England; and Marlborough Gallery, New York, New York. A native of Bolinas, California, Serra earned an M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design, Providence, and a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz.
